-- 194th giraffe calf born at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo!--

November 18, 2010 – Cheyenne Mountain Zoo welcomes the latest addition to their reticulated giraffe herd, a female calf born Sunday evening, November 14. We are happy to report she is nursing, which provides essential antibodies to help build her immune system. She underwent a neonatal exam by zoo veterinarian Dr. Liza Dadone Wednesday, November 17. Dr. Dadone micro-chipped the calf, checked vital signs, and took blood samples. Dr. Dadone confirmed the 5’9” calf is in good health, weighing in at 132 pounds. See the first photos of the new baby on Facebook!

This was mother Riyadh’s (RE-ahd) ninth birth. The calf was sired by the zoo’s bull giraffe, Mawimbi (ma-WIM-bee). The zoo will name the calf in the next few weeks.

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, America’s only mountain zoo, is home to the world’s most prolific captive reticulated giraffe herd, with 194 births at the zoo since 1954. Guests can get up close with giraffes on our special elevated platform and even have the opportunity to feed them.
