African Penguin Conservation

African Penguin populations have declined 75% in the last 20 years. As part of the effort to help stabilize and secure this endangered species, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo has partnered with SANCCOB (The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds) to support a Penguin Ranger. This Ranger is specially trained to monitor the penguin colony that lives on Robben Island off the coast of South Africa. The Ranger serves as a first responder in case of disasters, disease outbreaks, chick abandonment, or other incidents requiring intervention. Additionally the Ranger collects data on penguins and other seabirds that help conservation efforts.
